Currently, I am reading a book called The Book Thief, by Markus Zusak. The point of view is something quite different; it is from the point of view of Death. He collects people’s souls and he encounters is a young girl in Nazi, Germany, during World War II. Liesel Meminger lost her family and is adopted by a foster family where she learns many life lessons.
At one point in the novel, she says, “No papa, you’re not stupid, only human.” This was after a saddening scene that shows the cruelty of Hitler. Being near a Jewish camp, he demands all of the Jews to march through the city of Munich. Hans, Liesel’s foster father, sees one man in particular who is having trouble walking and is in need of food.
Being the person he is, he gives the man a piece of bread, only to be whipped and set as an outcast of society. The end result is that he puts his family in danger and that is when he calls himself stupid. His compassinate daughter is the one who brings sense to him and it only strenghtens their relationship.
This novel is a very well-written novel and I’m enjoying it very much. It is a more difficult read and sometimes a little confusing, although, the more you read, the more sense it makes.
